Abstract

Common language, along with common geography history, and culture, is one of the main pillars of the identity of nations. Persian language, which has been the common, national, and cultural language of all Iranians in its three generations, together with common memories and history, has played a key role in the formation, consolidation and permanence of the Iranian national identity in the geography of great cultural Iran. Since the beginning of Persian poetry, Iranian poets throughout the great cultural Iran, whether under Iranian governments or under the rule of foreigners, have recognized Persian language as national and cultural language and used it to express their thoughts and opinions. Writing poetry in Persian by all poets of the great cultural Iran during the eleven centuries of Persian poetry life has been one of the important factors in consolidating Iranian national identity. Also at the same time, Persian poetry has transferred elements of Iranian identity to the present era and have become a source of permanence and stability of Iran and Iranian nationality. This research seeks to find the enduring legacy of New Persian poetry; from Rudaki, the father of Persian poetry, to Shahriar, one of the most prominent poets of contemporary Iran; the relation between Persian poetry and Iranian identity and its role in transmission, preservation of continuity, reconstruction and permanence of Iranian civilization, culture and thought in Iran throughout the Islamic period.
