Abstract

A Study of Individual and Social Alienation in Simin Behbahani 's Poems Using Erich Fromm' s Theory Approach

Abstract

Alienation is one of the most important anthropological issues that has been considered in various fields such as sociology, psychology, philosophy, theology, and literature. Erich Fromm believes that factors such as: lack of human relationships, idolatry (both old and new), lack of meaning and purpose in life, lust, power, dominance of capitalists, etc. cause individual alienation and sometimes alienation from fellow human beings. This research uses an analytical-descriptive method to examine individual and social alienation in Simin Behbahani' s poems based on Erich Fromm's theory. The findings of the research show that Simin clearly refers to the problem of alienation and loneliness of contemporary man in her poems. She clearly shows how social discrimination, war, pain and suffering, poverty, and despair can cause individuals to become alienated. Behbahani' s poems not only reflect the pain and suffering of the individual that causes alienation in him, but he also sometimes tries to establish communication with others in order to find identity and meaning in life and escape from futility.
